Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed, LLC, told EPM this month that it is working with corn and livestock producers to enhance their profitability through the marketing and sale of ethanol coproducts wet and dry distillers grains. It's an effort that, a company spokesperson said, has literally materialized within the past three years.

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and distillers wet grains (DWG), coproducts of the ethanol production process, are recognized as practical and cost-efficient feed supplements for cattle, and more recently, swine and poultry.

By leveraging its expertise and national cooperative feed distribution system, Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed is working to provide ethanol producers with a national outlet to market and sell their DDGS and DWG, the company said. The marketer of these two products for several ethanol plants, the company is also aggressively pursuing other ethanol operations being proposed or currently under construction.

"Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed has made a major commitment to develop markets for these products," said Jim Jolly, Land O'Lakes national manager, distillers grains. "We see a great potential within the domestic markets, and will continue to be a leader in research, marketing and promotion throughout the United States. Our efforts will not only offer returns to our ethanol producers, but we feel we offer our end-users some distinct advantages as well."

Currently, about 80 percent of the DDGS and DWG produced is fed to dairy and beef cattle. As product awareness grows, swine and poultry producers also are incorporating these cost-efficient feed supplement products into their feeding regimens.

Industry analysts expect ethanol production to dramatically increase over the next five to ten years. Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed plans to continue developing markets for ethanol coproducts through numerous marketing initiatives.
