USDA: Corn use for fuel alcohol up in August

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service recently released the October edition of its Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report, noting total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses was 511 million bushels in August. According to the USDA, total corn consumption was up slightly when compared to July and up 3 percent when compared to August 2015.

August usage included 91.4 percent for alcohol and 8.6 percent for other purposes. Corn for fuel alcohol was at 458 million bushels, up slightly from July and up 3 percent from August 2015. Corn consumed for dry milling fuel production was 89.8 percent, with 10.2 percent for wet milling fuel production.

Corn use for beverage alcohol production was at 3.13 million bushels, up 20 percent from July and up slightly from August 2015.

Dry mill plants produced 143,040 tons of condensed distillers solubles, up from 140,639 tons in July, but down from 155,539 tons during August of the previous year. Corn oil production was at 142,000 tons, down from 144,020 tons in July and up from 120,756 tons in August 2015. Distillers dried grains production was at 428,748 tons, up from 404,758 tons in July, but down from 452,969 tons in August 2015. Distillers dried grains with solubles production was at 2.07 million tons, up from 2.05 million tons in July, and up from 1.93 tons in August 2015. Distillers wet grains production was at 1.23 million tons, up slightly from July, but down from 1.28 million tons in August of the previous year. Modified distillers wet grains production was at 353,664 tons, down from 359,613 tons in July and up from 339,316 tons in August 2015.

Wet mill plants produced 65,783 tons of corn germ meal, up from 65,032 tons in July and down from 66,563 tons in August 2015. Corn gluten feed production was at 336,916 tons, down from 339,700 tons in July, and down from 343,476 tons in August 2015. Corn gluten meal production was at 87,793 tons, down from 89,125 tons in July, and down from 96,072 tons in August. Corn oil production was at 53,970 tons, down from 57,325 tons in July, but up from 52,514 tons in August of the prior year. Wet corn gluten feed production was at 309,077 tons, down from 331,949 tons in July, but up from 290,652 tons in August 2015.

Carbon dioxide captured at dry and wet mill plants was at 224,408 tons, down from 230,934 tons in July, and down from 224,982 tons in August 2015.

According to the report, dry mill plants also consumed 4.37 million hundredweight (cwt) (244,496 tons) of sorghum in August, down from 5.98 million cwt in July.
