Corn consumed for fuel alcohol dropped from August to September

The USDA recently released the November edition of its Crain Crushings and Co-Products Production report, announcing total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses was 485 million bushels in September 2016, down 5 percent from August, but up 2 percent from September 2015. September usage included 91.5 percent for alcohol and 8.5 percent for other purposes.

Corn for fuel alcohol was at 435 million bushels, down 5 percent from August, but up 2 percent from September of the previous year. Corn consumed for dry milling fuel production was 89.3 percent, with 10.7 percent consumed for wet milling fuel production.

According to the USDA, 2.53 million hundredweight (cwt) (141,680 tons) of sorghum was also consumed for fuel alcohol production in September, down from 4.37 million ctw in August.

At dry mill plants, condensed distillers solubles production was at 146,764  tons, up from 143,040 tons in August , but down from 154,104 tons in September 2015. Corn oil production was at 134,269 tons, down from 142,000 tons in in August, but up from 116,155 tons in September 2015. Distillers dried grains production reached 398,124 tons, down from 428,748 tons in August and 420,548 tons in September of the previous year. Distillers dried grains with solubles production was 1.96 million tons, down from 2.07 million tons in August, but up from 1.88 million tons in September 2015. Distillers wet grains production was at 1.19 million tons, down from 1.23 million tons in August and 1.29 million tons in September of the previous year. Modified distillers wet grains production reached 375,167 tons, up from 253,664 tons in August and 366,770 tons in September 2015.

At wet mill plants, corn germ meal production was at 54,996 tons, down from 65,783 tons in August and 56,106 tons in September 2015. Corn gluten feed production reached 326,211 tons, down from 336,916 tons in August, but up from 312,543 tons in September 2015. Corn gluten meal production was at 86,725 tons, down from 87,739 tons in August, but up from 86,522 tons in September of the previous year. Corn oil production reached 50,524 tons, down from 53,970 tons in August, but up from 42,605 tons in September 2015. Wet corn gluten feed production was 303,504 tons, down from 309,077 tons in August, but up from 286,615 tons in September 2015.

Carbon dioxide captured at dry and wet mills was at 213,022 tons, down from 224,408 tons in August, but up from 210,337 tons in September of the previous year.
