By Erin Voegele | December 22, 2016

The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for November, reporting that nearly 1.66 billion RINs were generated during the month, including more than 16.54 million cellulosic RINs.

Approximately 16.46 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in November, bringing the net total for the first 11 months of the year to 159.35 million. So far this year, 3.3 million D3 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 96.53 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 61.36 million generated for renewable liquefied natural gas. Nearly 143.39 million D3 RINs have been generated domestically, with 17.3 million generated by importers.

EPA data shows 77,454 D7 cellulosic RINs were generated in November, bringing the net total for the first 11 months of the year to 480,988. All D7 cellulosic RINs generated so far this year have been generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.

More than 5.82 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in November, bringing the net total for the first 11 months of the year to 90.89 million. More than 59.28 million D5 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 22.94 million generated for naptha, 1.32 million generated for heating oil and 7.46 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. So far this year 56.61 million D5 RINs have been generated domestically, with 34.39 million generated by importers.

Nearly 1.24 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in November, bringing the net total for the first 11 months of the year to 13.85 billion. Most, 13.44 billion, were generated for ethanol, with 161.69 million generated for biodiesel, 258.62 million generated for nonester renewable diesel, and 126,227 generated for butanol. More than 13.43 billion D6 RINs have been generated domestically so far this year, with 171.78 million generated by importers and 258.62 million generated by foreign entities.

Nearly 377.15 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in November, bringing the net total for the first 11 months of the year to 3.47 billion. The majority, 2.83 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 640.55 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 2.13 million generated for renewable jet fuel. Nearly 2.53 billion D4 RINs have been generated domestically, with 659.33 million generated by importers and 283.74 million generated by foreign entities.

As of the close of November, the EPA estimates 17.59 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 73.03 million retired, 932.89 million locked and available and 15.94 million unlocked and available.
