USDA: Corn use for ethanol down in September

The USDA recently released its Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report for November, reporting that corn use for fuel ethanol production fell to 407 million bushels in September, down from both September 2018 and August 2019.

Total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses was 455 million bushels in September, down 10 percent from August and down 9 percent from September 2018. September usage included 91.3 percent for alcohol and 8.7 percent for other purposes.

Corn consumed for fuel alcohol was at 407 million bushels, down 11 percent from August of the previous year and down 10 percent from September. Corn consumed in September for dry milling fuel production and wet milling fuel production was 90.1 percent and 9.9 percent, respectively.

Sorghum consumed for fuel ethanol was at 5.127 million hundredweight (cwt) (287,112 tons) in September, down from 6.155 million ctw in August, but up from 4.29 million ctw in September 2018.

At dry mills, condensed distillers solubles production was at 102,911 tons, up from 95,690 tons in August, but down from 131,317 tons in September 2018. Corn oil production fell to 142,818 tons, down from 163,646 tons in August and 155,284 tons in September 2018. Distillers dried grains production fell to 289,633 tons, down from 336,043 tons in August and 376,510 tons in September of the previous year.  Distillers dried grains with solubles production fell to 1.78 million tons, down from 2.01 million tons in August and 1.95 million tons in September 2018. Distillers wet grains production fell to 1.22 million tons, down from 1.28 million tons in August and 1.3 million tons in September of the previous year. Modified distillers wet grains production fell to 398,794 tons, down from 409,285 tons in August and 408,708 tons in September 2018.

At wet mills, corn germ meal production was at 59,451 tons, up from 58,475 tons in August, but down from 59,668 tons in September 2018. Corn gluten feed production fell to 289,797 tons, down from 306,375 tons in August and 293,548 tons in September 2019. Corn gluten meal production was at 86,423 tons in September, down from 90,513 tons in August, but up from 83,262 tons in September 2018. Wet corn gluten feed production fell to 208,645 tons in September, down from 261,243 tons in August and 229,183 tons in September of the previous year.

Carbon dioxide captured at dry and wet mills fell to 253,981 tons, down from 266,355 tons in August and 260,179 tons in September 2018.
