The USDA and U.S. DOE took initial applications through Dec. 15 for grants ranging from $100,000 to $500,000 per applicant to research plant feedstock genomics for bioenergy. "Through this new program on feedstock genomics, [the agencies] hope to leverage genomic technologies toward improved utilization of plant lignocellulosic materials for the production of fuels such as ethanol," DOE spokeswoman Sharlene Weatherwax said. The agencies have asked selected applicants to submit formal applications by Feb. 23.
