EPA publishes 2012 RIN data

By Erin Voegele | January 25, 2013

The U.S. EPA has published renewable identification number (RIN) data for all 12 months of 2012. RINs are used by obligated parties to meet volume requirements of the renewable fuels standard (RFS).

No D3 cellulosic biofuel or D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in December. Nearly 93.73 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs (for 62.08 million gallons), 102.21 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs (for 100.8 million gallons) and 1.033 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs (for 1.33 billion gallons) were generated during the month.

For the year, only 20,069 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated, all in April. The biofuel industry also generated 1,741 cellulosic diesel RINs in 2012, all in November. A total of 1.726 billion biomass-based diesel RINs, 611million advanced biofuel RINs and 12.971 billion renewable fuel RINs were also generated in 2012.

According to EPA data, 20,069 assigned cellulosic biofuel RINs are currently available. Regarding biomass-based diesel, approximately 60.16 assigned RINs and 1.62 billion separated RINs are currently available. In addition, approximately 9.40 million assigned and 519.73 separated advanced biofuel RINs are available. For renewable fuel, 686.08 assigned and 12.19 separated RINs are available. Finally, only 1,741 separated cellulosic diesel RINs are available.

The majority of 2012 RINs were generated by domestic producers. Approximately 50.1 million biomass-based diesel RINs were generated by importers, with an additional 90.36 generated by foreign producers. In addition, 559.98 advanced biofuel RINs were generated by importers.
