The U.S. Energy Information Administration has published the March 2013 issue of its Monthly Energy Review, which includes ethanol production, use, and export data through the end of 2012. According to the monthly review, the U.S. ethanol industry produced 13.3 billion gallons of ethanol in 2012, showing a slight reduction from the nearly 13.93 billion gallons produced in 2011.

The report notes that ethanol production increased in December, reaching 1.09 billion gallons. This is an increase over the approximately 1.06 billion gallons produced the month prior. However, compared to the 1.25 billion gallons in production recorded for the same period of 2011, December’s production was down.

Net imports for December equaled -79,000 barrels. The net import level for the month prior was 997,000 barrels. The EIA data shows that the next import level for all of 2012 was -6 million barrels. In comparison, the net import level for all 12 months of 2011 was -24.93 million barrels.

The U.S. consumed an estimated 12.95 billion gallons of ethanol in 2012, showing a slight increase over the 2011 consumption level of 12.89 billion gallons. In December, the U.S. marketplace consumed 1.07 billion gallons of ethanol, an increase over the 1.04 billion gallons consumed one month prior.
