The U.S. EPA recently published data on renewable identification numbers (RINs) generated under the renewable fuel standard (RFS) during January 2013. While no cellulosic biofuel (D3) RINs were generated during the month, the EPA reported nearly 1.03 billion D6 renewable fuel and 44.7 million D5 renewable fuel RINs were generated during the month.

Ethanol accounted for nearly 43.66 million of the D5 advanced biofuel RINs generated in January. The balance were generated for biogas and renewable diesel fuels. Nearly all the 1.03 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated for ethanol production, with 9,192 generated for biodiesel production.

According to EPA data, nearly 468.97 million assigned D6 renewable fuel RINs were available when the data was compiled, along with an additional 543.54 million separated D6 renewable fuel RINs.

All of the D6 renewable fuel RINs generated in January are attributed to domestic production. Domestic production is also responsible for 2.99 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs. Approximately 41.71 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated by importers.
