Texas company offers ethanol mini-refineries

From beer and soda makers to fruit growers, Dallas-based Allard Research and Development LLC has designed ethanol production systems that provide "mini-refinery" capabilities to business, municipalities, farms and ranches, as well as commercial markets. Primarily a research and development facility, the company is designing and developing new technologies for small- to medium-scale ethanol production, closed-loop food and fuel production, green alternatives, self-sufficiency, and sustainable systems.READ MORE

Research: Microbes are an option for ethanol

Microbes may be a big player in the development of renewable fuels from cellulosic materials, researchers say, and experiments are being conducted into how they can be used to convert sugars to ethanol and mixed-generation fuels. The topic was discussed at a recent general meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. Researchers are looking at alternative biomass as feedstocks for microorganisms to ferment into ethanol and have demonstrated that the concept does work.READ MORE

EIA: World energy demand, biofuels use will grow

Worldwide demand for energy is expected to nearly double by 2030 and will be driven largely by developing countries, according to the Energy Information Administration. The agency recently released its annual International Energy Outlook, which stated that while short-term energy demand is dampened due to economic recession, long-term consumption is expected to return to levels anticipated prior to the recession.READ MORE

GPRE to acquire two Nebraska VeraSun plants

Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc. has signed definitive purchase agreements to purchase two Nebraska ethanol plants that AgStar Financial Services' lending group recently acquired through VeraSun Energy Corp.'s bankruptcy. The $123.5 million sale of the facilities near Central City and Ord, Neb., is expected to close in June. GPRE plans to have the plants fully operational within 60 days of the sale closing.READ MORE

House Energy and Commerce Committee approves cap-and-trade legislation; 25x'25 weighs in

On May 21 the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the American Clean Energy and Security Act, H.R. 2454, by a vote of 33 to 25. The legislation aims to create clean energy jobs, save consumers hundreds of billions of dollars in energy costs, enhance America's energy independence and cut global warming pollution. Now that the legislation has been approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, eight other House committees are expected to address the bill, including the House Agriculture Committee.READ MORE

RFA: 2000th E85 station opens in Miami

Two-thousand E85 station are now operating in the U.S. On May 28, the renewable fuels industry officially celebrated the grand opening of Griffin U-Gas in Davies, Fla., which is located just north of Miami. The Renewable Fuels Association, Protec Fuel Management, Urbieta Oil, U-Gas, General Motors Co., and Enterprise Rent-a-Car assisted with the station's opening and supported a promotional effort that included selling E85 at a reduced price.READ MORE

Obama responds to governors' biofuels concerns

The Governors' Biofuels Coalition received a letter from President Barack Obama on May 27 responding to the coalition's Feb. 17 letter requesting that the president articulate a vision for the future of biofuels in the U.S. The coalition also asked Obama to address policies related to lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions for transportation fuels, increase ethanol blends to E13, increase the sustainability of biofuel feedstocks, and further develop biofuels markets.READ MORE

NASS report shows delay in corn planting

The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service's crop progress report, released on May 26, showed that corn plantings are slightly down compared to the same time period last year. The report included data on corn plantings and emerging corn in 18 states, which represent 92 percent of last year's corn acreage. As of the week ending May 24, the report showed that 82 percent of the corn crop in these 18 states has been planted.READ MORE
