A public meeting on the Food Safety Modernization Act is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking public input on &ldquo;the FDA&rsquo;s comprehensive planning effort for the next phase of FSMA implementation, which involves putting in place the new public health prevention measures and the risk-based industry accountability framework that is at the core of the act.&rdquo;
The final rule to implement FSMA was published in early September, introducing major changes to the food and feed industries. Compliance dates have been staggered, requiring the largest companies to have current good manufacturing practices in place by September 2016 and preventive controls a year later. Smaller companies with less than 500 employees have an additional year for each phase and very small companies, with annual sales under $2.5 million have three and four years to comply.
For the animal feed industry, medicated feeds have long been regulated but FSMA is introducing new regulations and recordkeeping requirements applicable to the entire supply chain. Ethanol facilities producing distillers grains and corn oil bound for feed rations are just learning what the rule will specifically require of them.
