UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced mills in the country&rsquo;s south-central region continued to prioritize ethanol production during the second half of July.
Mills in the region processed approximately 49.44 million tons of sugarcane during the second half of July, up 37.35 percent from the 35.99 million tons processed during the same period of last year. From the start of the current season, mills in the south-central region of crushed 279.37 million tons of sugarcane, nearly equivalent to the 280.38 million tons crushed during the same period of last year. The total recoverable sugars index from the start of the current season through the end of July is 124.66 kilograms per ton, down 3.2 percent from the 128.78 kilograms per ton reported for the same period of last year.
Ethanol production totaled 2.19 billion liters (578 million gallons) during the second half of July, including 891.4 million liters of anhydrous ethanol and 1.3 billion liters of hydrous ethanol. When compared to the 1.6 billion liters produced during the same period of 2014, ethanol production is up 37.07 percent. Sugar production during the second half of July was 2.79 million tons. According to UNICA, 43.93 percent of the cane processed during the second half of July went to sugar production, down from 46.23 percent during the same period of last year.
From the start of the current season through the end of July, ethanol production has reached 12.17 billion liters, including 4.28 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol and 7.89 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 16.93 percent from the same period of last year. Sugar production was 13.5 million tons, down from 15.13 million tons last year.
Ethanol sales by south-central units reached 2.7 billion liters in July, with 2.46 billion liters sold domestically and 240.4 million liters destined for export. In the domestic market, sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 855.86 million liters during the month, up slightly from 853.21 million liters sold last July. Hydrous ethanol sales were up 50 percent when compared to last year, reaching 1.61 billion liters in July, up from 1.09 billion liters last year. July sales of hydrous ethanol were just under the record volume set in July 2009.&nbsp;
