In mid-April, UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, announced final numbers for the 2014-&rsquo;15 crop along with initial data for the new crop.
According to UNICA, mills in the center-south region of Brazil sold 2.3 billion liters (607.60 million gallons) of ethanol into the domestic market in March, a 21.8 percent increase over sales during the same month of 2014. Data released by UNICA indicates the growth is due to record sales of hydrous ethanol, at 1.44 billion liters. The sales of anhydrous ethanol totaled 866.06 million liters during the month.
From April 2014 through March 2015, mills in the region sold 25.17 billion liters of ethanol, down slightly from the 25.67 billion liters sold during the previous season. Of the 25.17 billion liters sold, UNICA reported 23.67 billion liters were sold domestically, up 2.45 percent from the previous season. Of that amount, 9.62 billion gallons of the ethanol sold was anhydrous ethanol and 14.05 billion liters was hydrous ethanol.
UNICA reported exports reached 1.5 billion liters during the 2014-&rsquo;15 season, down significantly from the 2.57 billion liters exported during the previous season.
According to UNICA, final data for the 2014-&rsquo;15 harvest also shows 571.34 million tons of sugarcane was processed, down 4.31 percent from the previous season.
While sugar production decreased by 2.3 million tons when compared to the 2013-&lsquo;14 season, reaching 31.99 million tons, ethanol production increased 2.23 percent, reaching 26.15 billion liters. The production of hydrous ethanol reached 15.39 billion liters, up from 14.57 billion liters the prior year. In addition, 10.75 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol was produced during the 2014-&rsquo;15 season.
Moving into the current 2015-&rsquo;16 season, mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 5.42 million liters of sugarcane through April 1, up 44.2 percent from the same period of last year. According to UNICA, sugar production reached 152.8 tons, while ethanol production reached 231.57 million liters, including 38.92 million liters of anhydrous ethanol and 192.65 million liters of hydrous ethanol.
UNICA also reported that 53 production units were in operation during the second half of March, down from 62 during the same period of the previous harvest year. By April 15, 170 units were expected to be operating in the region, compared to 163 during the same period of last year.&nbsp;
