USDA approves latest round of advanced biofuel payments The USDA approved its latest round of payments to producers of advanced biofuels on Sept. 27, giving the green light for more than $76 million to be distributed to more than 160 producers in 41 states. READ MORE SHARE
Gevo announces $5 million USDA grant, contract with Air Force Advanced biofuels company, Gevo Inc., announced it has been awarded $5 million to develop biojet fuel from woody biomass and forest product residues. 	Lignin biojet project wins DARPA funding A researcher has been selected to receive a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Young Faculty Award to support the development of a technology to produce jet fuel from lignin from cellulosic ethanol production or the pulp and paper industry. ZeaChem gets grant to expand demo plant for jet fuel In Washington, ZeaChem Inc. is part of a coalition led by the University of Washington which received $40 million from the USDA to develop biogasoline and renewable jet fuel production from hybrid poplar trees. READ MORE SHARE
Codexis to develop improved yeasts for sugarcane ethanol Technology developer Codexis Inc. signed a joint development agreement with Raizen Energia S.A., Brazil's largest sugar and ethanol producer, to improve cane-based ethanol production using its "directed evolution" biocatalyst technology platform. Open Fuel Standard companion bill introduced in Senate Nearly five months after the Open Fuel Standard Act was first introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Dick Lugar, R-Ind., have introduced a companion bill in the Senate. READ MORE SHARE

Brazil-US ethanol tariff discussions pick up as expiration nears As the U.S ethanol industry confronts the reality that the 45-cent-per-gallon Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit and 54-cent ethanol import tariff will end Dec. 31, industry representatives are ramping up efforts to extend the tariff beyond 2011.
