New York fuel station offers E85

A Latham, N.Y.-based Exxon Mobil Corp. station became the region's 10th E85 station Dec. 11. The instillation of the E85 pump was made possible through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's New York State Biofuel Station Initiative, which is designed to accelerate the installation of retail E85 and biodiesel service stations throughout New York.READ MORE

Alberta to enact renewable fuel standard

Alberta's Provincial Energy Strategy was announced Dec. 11. The strategy, a long-term energy action plan thatincludes adopting a renewable fuel standard, would require the inclusion of 5 percent ethanol in gasoline and 2 percent renewable fuel in diesel. Coskata secures equity financing

Warrenville, Ill.-based cellulosic ethanol developer Coskata Inc. has secured a Series C round of equity financing led by New York-based Blackstone Cleantech Venture Partners LP. The company intends to use the funds to complete construction of its 40,000-gallon-per-year demonstration facility in Madison, Pa., which is expected to be operational in early 2009.READ MORE

Grain suppliers uncertain about VeraSun contracts

Grain suppliers with corn contracts linked to bankrupt ethanol producer VeraSun Energy Corp. are seeking certainty as to whether their corn contracts will be honored or rejected in the coming months. At a court hearing in early December, a U.S. bankruptcy judge granted VeraSun approval to reject certain corn purchase contracts.READ MORE

Researchers demo Hi-Tech Agro pellet mill

A handful of biomass pellet manufacturers, agribusiness investment bankers, biomass business consultants and biomass researchers demonstrated the Hi-Tech Agro PL500 flat-die pellet mill to representatives from Hi-Tech Agro Projects Private Ltd., a biomass densification system manufacturer based in New Delhi, India, on Dec. 9. The mill is being used to test how energy crops in the U.S. can be made into pellets for combustion and other applications.READ MORE

Genencor, USDA continue barley-to-ethanol research

Enzyme developer Genencor, a division of Danisco AS, has extended its Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the USDA's Eastern Regional Research Center to continue development of an economically viable process for converting barley into ethanol.READ MORE

WASDE: Corn supplies to increase as demand drops

In the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report released Dec. 11, the USDA lowered its projections regarding corn use for ethanol and exports. "Ethanol use is projected 300 million bushels lower this month as prospects for blending above federally mandated levels decline," the report stated.READ MORE
