Ethanol emergency response training availableThe Ethanol Emergency Response Coalition has released the latest version of its Complete Training Guide for Ethanol Emergency Response. The guide includes videos, an instructor's guide and interactive workshops focusing on specific areas of ethanol emergency response. "We are proud of the collaborative efforts of all the stakeholders in the EERC to make this resource available," Renewable Fuels Association Technical Director Kristy Moore said. "Preventing just one injury makes all the resources invested in this effort worthwhile."READ MORE Virginia investigates sale of fuel containing a high percentage of ethanolBetween June 8 and July 7 the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) received more than 500 complaints regarding fuel containing high levels of ethanol that was sold in the Tidewater area of the state, which includes the cities and counties located along the state's coastal region.
According to VDACS, eight of the department's Office of Product and Industry Standards (OPIS) inspectors are dedicating their full attention to investigating these complaints. As of July 7, these inspectors had investigated 457 of the 532 complaints received by VDACS during this time.READ MORE GPRE completes acquisition of production facilitiesGreen Plains Renewable Energy Inc. has completed the acquisition a 100 MMgy ethanol production facilities Central City, Neb. and a 50 MMgy production facility in Ord, Neb. The former VeraSun Energy Corp. plants were purchased by GPRE from a lender group led by AgStar Financial Services for $123.5 million. The lending group had acquired the facilities via a bankruptcy auction earlier this year and has agreed to provide financing for GPRE's acquisition. "We are delighted to close this transaction and look forward to bringing these plants online as soon as possible," GPRE President and CEO Todd Becker said.READ MORE Companies partner for MSW-to-ethanol testingMunicipal-solid-waste-to-energy technology company CleanTech Biofuels Inc. announced a deal with waste-fiber-to-fuel company Fiberight LLC, where CleanTech will supply Fiberight with approximately 2,000 pounds of feedstock for ethanol conversion research/testing. The impetus of the partnership is to establish anticipated yields and operating costs from using biomass produced by CleanTech to generate ethanol using Fiberight's enzymatic biofuel production process.READ MORE Construction to begin on Alberta advanced energy research facilityEnerkem, the Alberta Energy Research Institute and the city of Edmonton, Alberta, plan to begin construction on a $127 million waste-to-biofuels advanced energy research facility. AERI is funding the facility, which will be supported by Enerkem, a leading waste-to-biofuels technology and green chemicals company. Through AERI, the Alberta government has contributed $9 million in funding to the project. The research center is part of a biofuels project which will include the research facility, a municipal waste processing facility being built by the City of Edmonton, and a 36 MMly (9.51 MMgy) commercial municipal solid waste-to-cellulosic ethanol plant that will be built by Enerkem GreenField Alberta Biofuels.READ MORE BBI International co-founder, industry pioneer diesWith great sadness, the family of BBI International President and co-founder Kathy Bryan announced Monday that the well-known ethanol industry veteran died Saturday, July 11, at her home in Salida, Colo., after a hard fought battle with cancer.
