Ethanol industry vows to fight court’s reversal of E15 rule


The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on July 2 reversed a rule issued by the U.S. EPA in 2019 allowing year-round E15 sales. Representatives of the U.S. ethanol industry have vowed to pursue all available options to ensure continuity of E15 sales.

Bill aims to clarify congressional intent on ‘extension’ of SREs


Reps. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, and Angie Craig, D-Minn., on July 2 introduced the Small Refinery Exemption Clarification Act of 2021, which aims to clarify the definition of “extension” in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 25 ruling on SREs.

Axne introduces bill to create tax credit for E15, higher blends


Reps. Cindy Axne, D-Iowa, and Adrian Smith, R-Neb., on June 30 introduced the Low Carbon Biofuel Credit Act, a bill that aims to create a tax credit for each gallon of fuel containing 15 percent or greater ethanol content.

EIA: US biofuel capacity up in April


The U.S. EIA released its latest Monthly Biofuels Capacity and Feedstock Update on June 30, reporting that production capacity for both fuel ethanol and “other” biofuels increased in April. Capacity for biodiesel held steady.

EIA: Ethanol production up 1%, stocks up 2%


U.S. fuel ethanol production was up 1 percent the week ending June 25, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on June 30. Weekly ending stocks of fuel ethanol expanded by more than 2 percent.

USDA: Corn planted acres up 2%, corn stocks down 18%


The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service on June 30 announced that an estimated 92.7 million acres of corn has been planted in the U.S. for 2021, up 2 percent or 1.87 million acres when compared to 2020.

Senators urge Biden to resist Big Oil’s demands to undercut RFS


Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa; Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa; John Thune, R-S.D.; Michael Rounds, R-S.D.; Ben Sasse, R-Neb.; and Deb Fischer, R-Neb., on June 30 sent a letter to President Biden urging him to resist calls from Big Oil to undercut the RFS.

Brazilian energy company Raizen S.A. on June 25 announced plans to invest in the development of a second cellulosic ethanol plant. The proposed facility is expected to have a nameplate capacity of 82 MMly (21.66 MMgy).
