House passes biofuel infrastructure, E15 bill


The U.S. House of Representatives on June 16 voted 221 to 204 in favor of the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act, a legislative package that includes funding for biofuel infrastructure and a provision to allow year-round sales of E15.

Senators ask GAO if SRE denials require congressional review


Sens. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn.; Shelly Moore Capito, R-W.V.; and Roger Wicker, R-Miss., are asking the GAO to determine whether the U.S. EPA’s June 3 denial of 69 SREs must be submitted to Congress for review under the Congressional Review Act.

EPA: 1.84 billion RINs generated in May


The U.S. EPA has released data showing that nearly 1.84 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in May, up from 1.72 billion generated during the same month of last year.

Clariant on June 14 announced that it has produced the first commercial cellulosic ethanol at its sunliquid production plant in Podari, Romania. The entire offtake is contracted with a multi-year agreement to Shell.

EU ethanol sets new record for GHG reduction


Renewable ethanol from ePURE members reduced GHG emissions by 77 percent compared to fossil fuel in 2021, according to the latest audited producer data. ePURE also said ethanol refineries produced more feed than fuel.

EPA: 3 SRE petitions currently pending


The U.S. EPA on June 16 published updated data on small refinery exemptions (SREs) filed under the Renewable Fuel Standard, reporting that only three SRE petitions are currently pending, down from 69 that were pending as of mid-May.

UNICA: Ethanol sales down in May


UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has released data showing that sugarcane processing and ethanol production during the second half of May were roughly flat with last year. Ethanol sales were down slightly.

EIA: Ethanol production up 2%, stocks down 2%


U.S. fuel ethanol production expanded by 2 percent the week ending June 10, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on June 15. Weekly ending stocks of fuel ethanol were down nearly 2 percent.

Gevo Inc. announced that its RNG project in Northwest Iowa has been producing biogas and is now upgrading and injecting RNG into the natural gas pipeline. The project generates RNG from dairy cow manure supplied by three dairy farms.
