Red Trail Energy begins carbon capture and storage


The first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project allowed under state primacy in the U.S. has commenced operations. Red Trail Energy LLC officially began CCS at its ethanol facility located near Richardton, North Dakota, on June 16.

EIA increases 2022, 2023 fuel ethanol production forecasts


The U.S. Energy Information Administration increased its forecasts for 2022 and 2023 fuel ethanol production in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released July 13. The forecast for 2023 fuel ethanol consumption was also increased.

EU ethanol production, consumption expected in increase in 2022


Ethanol consumption in the European Union was up an estimated 5.5 percent last year, surpassing the pre-COVID level of 2019 and setting a new record. EU ethanol consumption is expected to expand an additional 2.3 percent this year.

U.S. fuel ethanol production fell nearly 4 percent the week ending July 8, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on July 13. Ethanol stocks expanded by nearly 1 percent.

The USDA maintained its forecast for 2022-’23 corn use in ethanol in its latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, released July 12. The 2022-’23 corn outlook is for increased supplies and higher ending stocks.

EIA: RIN prices for ethanol, biomass-based diesel remain high


The prices of RIN credits—a compliance mechanism used for the RFS program administered by the U.S. EPA—have remained high in 2022. So far this year, D4 RINs peaked on April 28 at $1.91 per gallon and D6 RINs peaked on June 7 at $1.68 per gallon.
