BASF is introducing a new version of its Lutropur brand of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) with higher active concentration for multiple applications in biodiesel and ethanol processing. BASF&rsquo;s new Lutropur MSA-XP features 94 percent active concentration compared to 70 percent in Lutropur MSA, which the company introduced to biodiesel producers in 2013.
MSA has gained popularity in biodiesel production as a versatile chemical replacement for harsher acids such as sulfuric acid used to esterify free fatty acids, neutralize crude biodiesel and glycerin, and soap splitting to separate fatty acids. MSA has helped biodiesel producers achieve improved esterification, and faster and cleaner phase separation with less corrosion and toxicity, and elimination of insolubles, emulsions, discolorations and additional side effects resulting from other types of acids. The new Lutropur MSA-XP from BASF features even more advantages in biodiesel esterification over Lutropur MSA.&nbsp; Lutropur MSA can also aid fuel ethanol production in various ways. BASF says it is a highly effective acid for CIP systems. In addition, by replacing sulfuric acid, Lutropur MSA can increase corn oil extraction, reduce fouling and improve DDGS color, which help contribute to greater ethanol plant performance and profitability.&nbsp; Biodiesel Magazine&nbsp;is hosting a&nbsp;<a href="http://161215-1-chemical-2-biofuel-industries-webinar.biodieselmagazine.com/ema/DisplayPage.aspx?pageId=Home">free webinar</a>&nbsp;Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time, titled &ldquo;1 Chemical, 2 Biofuel Industries, Multiple Applications,&rdquo; on BASF&rsquo;s MSA products, and how they can improve performance at biodiesel and ethanol production facilities. Experts from BASF will present technical information on how Lutropur MSA and Lutropur MSA-XP can increase efficiencies and performance, and biofuel producers will provide testimony on their experience with MSA and MSA-XP vs. sulfuric and other acids.
